“Thank you for fostering such an accepting, nonjudgemental spirit of curious exploration!” Cynthia
Are you bored with your scale practice?
Scales, like life, are full of longing, tension and release. They speak of relationship – conflictual, harmonious, tenuous – and resolution. They can rise and fall like waves, soar like the wind and tumble like autumn leaves……and yet we practice them mechanically. Practicing scales is an essential way to learn the map of the instrument, becoming comfortable, free and at ease everywhere and in every key. They are not just about the left hand, but about breathing our bows and our bodies. Scales can, like meditation, become a daily practice, both simple and profound, of becoming grounded, integrated, connected, present and embodied.
This is a weekly drop-in class for anyone who has not yet discovered the beauty of scales, or for whom the lustre of scale practice has dimmed. Using the breath to support us, we will explore, discuss, play and celebrate scales together in various rhythms, shapes, characters and speeds. String players of all levels are welcome. No one is too experienced, too inexperienced, too young or too old for scales!
