Summer Slow Sessions
4 August 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm BST
£10.00
This is a drop in class. You don’t have to be attending a regular class to come, just tune up and turn up!
A chance for players of all instruments to learn folk tunes by ear, at a speed we can all manage.
Mairi Campbell leads a weekly slow session. We cover the common tunes you’d find at a pub session in Scotland but we play them at a slow pace and several times so people can join in (melody, chords or harmonies).
Every week you will get a chance to play waltzes, airs, jigs, reels, hornpipes and polkas – all played at a slow or moderate swinging tempo.
There is music available but we are also keen to improve our memory for learning music by ear. All levels of player welcome. Mairi is a fiddler and will give specific support on this instrument. We work from Nigel Gatherers Slow session tune book online.
Your repertoire will grow steadily, as each week we play the tunes at slow-to-moderate speed. This is the best way to develop your memory for music.
We will also enjoy some of the authentic traditions of sessions, including choosing tunes around the circle, linking tunes into sets, and quaffing our favorite beverage albeit in the comfort of our own home.
