The Breath and Bow Technique
14 October 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm BST
£12.50
Six 60-minute sessions on how the breath inspires, informs and supports us.
“Working with Ruth opened up my eyes to a completely new way of approaching my instrument; marrying movement and breath, and helping me feel more grounded, even from the other end of a zoom call! I can’t recommend her classes enough!’ – Sinead o Halloran, winner of the RNCM 2021 Gold Medal and recently appointed cellist of the Marmen Quartet
In these six sessions, Ruth Phillips will guide a group of string players through different aspects of how the breath supports, calms and informs us. By developing an understanding of the nature of the inhale and the exhale we will begin to experience the vital balance between tension and release, inspiration and expression, doing and non-doing, and how that balance affects everything from the way we sit to the speed of our vibrato. Ruth’s approach is simple, mindful and natural, touching on our shared aspirations as musicians and as human beings.
String players of all levels are welcome. In Ruth’s experience teaching groups, she has found that professionals and students can learn as much from amateurs as the other way round. Whilst everyone brings a unique voice, we all share similar struggles and a need to connect with one another, so there will be ample time for discussion and personal questions.
