The Transpiring Band was founded in September 2017 at The Loft, my home in Crouch End. The original band line up was theremin, ringing percussion, keyboard, electronics, and as bandleader, myself on voice.

I wanted to create a hybrid space that I thought of as a perform-shop inviting participants to join the band. The band picked up on the mood, ideas and other signals from each participant-soloist, influencing our improvisations.

During lockdown everything stopped, and I purchased a desktop looper which I have been working on with online students (on zoom) and, in professional duos (with a latency-free audio internet room called Sonobus).

The live band has sadly gone for the time being, but the looper gives me a way of creating multiple parts over which others can sing or play. Like in the band, you are invited to invoke an idea – clear or fuzzy, as a starting point. It may be something that you discovered in Vocal Tai Chi (my other course) or something new.

I then respond with looping, and supportive solo vocals that are there to encourage and inspire you.

Let’s see what transpires is a phrase people say when looking to the future, wondering what might possibly occur. It suggests, let’s see what happens – when we’re in the moment. The Transpiring Band is that moment.

Transpiration is also an interesting word in biology – a plant sucks up water from the earth to drink, and then, once replete, excretes the excess water through its leaves, forming droplets, thus offering back to the world the source of sustenance it has just benefitted from. Perfect, as a metaphor.

These are quite free-wheeling improvisation sessions and can also get going using a theme drawn from your own recent life experiences, sometimes funny, sometimes serious – which I have termed aipera (ie not opera!).

I am acting both as a coach, as needed, and mainly as an improviser – taking my lead from you as the special guest and working with your material, in a duo or trio.

The music you create can be recorded and sent to you after the session.
