This course is based on the book ‘Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race’ by Debbie Irving.

You will be able to both enter into the practice AND see how we use InterPlay to deal with our own socialized systemic racism.

Limber Up! 1 The Back

Warm-up as a whole musician, easing blockages and finding fluidity. In Part 1 we will debunk the myth of good posture and explore the life in the back, feet and shoulders. In Part Two we will look at how to move from the core, from vibrato through shifting, integrating both sides of the body, and finding stillness in movement and movement in stillness.
1. The Back: Debunking the myth of ‘the straight back’. When we explore how the breath moves the spine, we can find mobility in the torso that enhances our expression and eases our movement.

Stylistic Matters: Preparing Orchestral Excerpts: 6 sessions

For viola players preparing orchestral excerpts who want to explore the differences in playing styles between early, classical, romantic and modern. All aspects of technique will be covered, so that different uses of bow, vibrato and tone production between the styles becomes clear.

Viola Explorations: 6 sessions

For any player who is curious about how improvising within structures can help us find freedom when we play. Using music of your choice we will leave the dots, go on a guided journey of discovery and return to them again with fresh ears.

Bow Pranayama: 3 session course

A series of simple breathing exercises applied directly to your bow arm, supporting you as a string player on every level – physical, mental, and musical.
